Exploring the Coast

The perfect starting point

Gibsons Landing is home to a variety of charming boutiques, galleries, cafes, and restaurants - shop, stroll, and dine, all against the backdrop of Howe Sound and vistas of the coastal mountains. Stop by Gibsons Public Market to enjoy local food and fresh produce, or stroll along the public dock where fishermen sell the morning’s catch.

Day trips to Gambier and Keats Island are another popular activity on the Sunshine Coast. Foot passenger service is easily accessible by Gibsons Harbour Ferry or Sunshine Coast Water Taxi, both departing from the dock in Gibsons Landing. Beachcomb, swim, rest and rejuvenate along the scenic shores, and enjoy a relaxing escape from daily life.

Davis Bay Beach is one of the longest stretches of sandy beach on the Sunshine Coast, and definitely a must-see. The boardwalk & pier are perfect spots to catch stunning sunsets over the Georgia Strait.

Downtown Sechelt is another idyllic coastal town, perfect for an afternoon of exploring. Wander down streets of quaint shops, sample an assortment of bars and restaurants, and stroll along the picturesque seawall for spectacular ocean views.

Where to Eat and Drink

Hope you brought your appetite!

Bars and Restaurants - Almost too many to name, but some of our favourites include:

  • Lunitas Mexican Eatery (tacos & margaritas along the seawalk in lower Gibsons)

  • Smoke on the Water (BBQ shack on the wharf in Gibsons, offering authentic flavours and housemade hot sauce)

  • Joe's on the Beach (phenomenal oceanfront patio on Davis Bay)

  • The Basted Baker (our go-to brunch spot in Sechelt)

Bakeries - If you have a sweet tooth, you’ve absolutely come to the right place. No trip to the Sunshine Coast is complete without a stop at either:

  • Sandy’s Bake Shop (in Gibsons)

  • The Bakery (in Sechelt)

Cideries & Breweries - The Coast is also home to several incredible cideries, featuring home-grown BC apples, and craft breweries:

  • Sunday Cider and Banditry Cider are both minutes away from Gibsons, and make for perfect afternoon destinations!

  • Persephone Brewing Company, an 11-acre farm-based brewery, offers picturesque outdoor seating, a cosy tasting room, and summer farmer’s markets.

  • Tapworks Brewing Company, located in Gibsons Landing, offers a more urban setting with an incredible rooftop patio.

Hiking on the Coast

Lace up those shoes - trust us, it's worth it.

Soames Hill is just around the corner, a short 4-minute drive from Sunshine Lodge. Enjoy stunning views of Gibsons Harbour, the coastal mountain range, and local islands (Keats, Gambier, and Bowen Island). The trail is relatively short, but fairly steep; it typically takes 40-60 minutes to complete.

Cliff Gilker Park is a popular gathering place for families, walkers, photographers, and naturalists. The trail system covers more than 7km, and includes colour-coded hiking routes cutting through forests, over creeks, and across unique wooden bridges. These trails are located just a short drive away, in Roberts Creek.

Chapman Creek Trail offers a spectacular route through an old growth forest, winding along the creek before reaching Chapman Falls. A round trip will likely take 2-3 hours, and access to the trail can be found directly behind The Oceanside, A Coast Hotel in Davis Bay.

Outdoor Recreation

"Would you like an adventure now, or shall we have our tea first?"

Water sports: Whether you’re into kayaking, canoeing, or stand-up paddle-boarding, the Sunshine Coast offers all paddlers unlimited exploration of magnificent bays, inlets and offshore islands. Much of the coastline is sheltered, providing good protection from the elements and enabling you to make the most of your paddling adventure. Alpha Adventures is conveniently located at the dock in Lower Gibsons, so all you need to do is hop in!

Mountain Biking: With year-round trail access and a passionate community of friendly riders, the Sunshine Coast is one of the best places to go mountain biking in North America. Sprockids Bike Park, just minutes away from Sunshine Lodge, offers a variety of trails for all ages and skill levels. In addition, Coast Gravity Park in Sechelt is one of the newest additions to the Coast biking scene, featuring 160 acres and a growing network of trails.

Golf: Avid golfers can take advantage of two 18-hole golf courses, just a short drive away: Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club and Blue Ocean Golf Club. Enjoy ocean and mountain views, lush green fairways winding through the forest, and manicured greens.
